Book Club – The Break by Marian Keyes
I haven’t read a book in ages (you may have noticed that I have been a little quiet on Book Club). It’s not because I haven’t wanted to read. I’ve picked books up that have been on other Book Club lists but try as I may to get into the novels, I’ve struggled. When I go to bed at night, I just want something that is easy reading to help me which off from my day. Something that I don’t have to analyse or think about.
The Break by Marian Keyes ticked all the boxes for me. I was literally reading it into the small hours, I couldn’t put the book down, I loved it.
The O’Connells live in Dublin. They’re slightly dysfunctional but a stable family, well they were until Hugh decides that he needs a six-month break. It turns Amy’s life upside down and she is temporarily left to be the sole parent to Neeve, Sofie and Kiera. (I’m not going to spoil things and tell you why he left, in case you decide to give it a read.)
Amy’s friends, although trying to be supportive, alienate Amy and her feelings for Hugh, they don’t understand why he felt he had to leave and why Amy is kind of ok about it.
We go through Amy and her family’s ups and downs, the cries and the laughs. It’s a real page turner and you’re not quite sure what is going to come next.
There are parts where I gasped. – I wasn’t expecting things and you didn’t always see them coming. I was gutted to get to the last page.
This book has a real mixed bag of reviews but for me, it gets a thumbs up.
