National Personal Trainer Awareness Day – 2nd January 2018


Each year we go through this vicious cycle in thinking ‘how much work do I have to do to burn off the champagne and festive food? and ‘how hard is it going to be to get back that summer body I worked hard for last year and let slip under my baggy winter clothes?’

Why not make a change this year?

Why not take the dread out of it, and put some of the work onto someone else? A personal trainer perhaps? I know what you’re thinking, I don’t need a trainer, I can do it myself, I just need motivation. Believe me when I say that I know all of the excuses but once you try working out with a trainer, you’ll wonder why you haven’t done it before!

Hands up, who says that they’re going to the gym on the way home but finds an excuse not to go?

Imagine having an appointment at the gym and not just thinking I’ll go when I have time, or I’m not going tonight because I don’t know what to do in the gym today. Make a date with a personal trainer and have a scheduled session with someone who’ll give you their full attention for a whole hour. And if the thought of an hours’ exercise fills you with dread, don’t panic. Your sessions will be tailored to exactly what you need. Whether that is a more gentle workout for those who haven’t exercised before, or a full on high intensity fat burning sessions, it really is your session, and your trainer will work hard with you to get the best out of your workout for you.

Imagine telling someone what you really want to achieve, and not just anyone, someone who can help you get there. If your goal is to lose some festive weight, or just to feel happier and healthier in your own skin, your trainer can set you realistic targets, measure progress along the way and work with you to keep you motivated.

And finally, imagine how amazing you’ll feel when you hit your goals? There is no better feeling I can promise you!

So, I challenge you, right now to get a pen and paper and write down your goals for the next few months and write down what might stop you from getting there – is it time? Money? Here are a few ways that you can combat those barriers:

Time. Don’t get me wrong, we are all so busy, and fitting healthy living into your already busy schedule does need some commitment. However I want you to see it as a lifestyle change rather than a burden. There are 7 days of the week, equating to 168 hours. Let’s say on average 40 of those are spent working, and 56 of those are spent sleeping. That leaves 72 hours spare. Why not spend 3-4 hours of those 72 to getting some good quality exercise. Sound fair?

Money. Yes, having a trainer costs money, fact. What if I told you that if you cut out one bottle of wine bought from a supermarket, one takeaway or dinner out, and 3 coffees bought from a coffee shop each week you’d save enough to have a personal training session. When we say it costs money, it does, but remember you’re not just paying for a trainer, you are investing in your health and lifestyle, and to do that there will be some inevitable sacrifices such as the odd bottle of wine and takeaway. Was one of your New Year’s resolutions to be healthier? Or to take part in dry January? – You’re half way there.
